The new Silvertown tunnel has an off-peak discount for all vehicles, but you need to register
Yesterday, the Silvertown tunnel opened, and if you don’t qualify for Silvertown tunnel discounts, you should still register for lower off-peak tolls.
The new tunnel under the Thames, which opened yesterday, links the Greenwich Peninsula with the Lower Lea Crossing.
Transport for London has introduced a reduced rate for off-peak drivers, bringing the cost down to £1.50 for a motorcycle, car or small van per crossing. But this is only available if you’ve registered your vehicle with Auto Pay through a London Road User Charging account.
Off-peak hours apply between 06:00 and 22:00, including weekends. Peak hours for the tunnel are between 06:00 and 22:00 northbound, with southbound being 16:00 to 19:00, Monday to Friday.
Without signing up, you’ll have to manually pay the full peak tariff, which is £4 for cars and small vans. This fee would need to be paid within three days of travel or risk being fined up to £180.
To access the reduced off-peak rates:
- Set up a London Road User Charging account on the TfL website
- Link to a payment card
- Tell TfL which vehicles you want to register
- Register for Auto Pay
Auto Pay can also cover other charges such as the Congestion Charge, ULEZ and LEZ, and be used for up to five vehicles.
