Updates on Thames Wharf DLR station expected in April
Quiet progress is being made on plans for a Thames Wharf DLR near the Silvertown tunnel but TfL says a funding gap still exists.
Progress is being made on developing a Thames Wharf DLR station with a feasibility report expected next month.
If built, the station would sit between Canning Town station and West Silvertown station next to where the new Silvertown Tunnel emerges north of the river.
The site was passively safeguarded for a future station during the construction of the London City Airport DLR extension in the mid 2000s.
A TfL (Transport for London) report released earlier this month says TfL have been working with ‘a potential delivery partner and funders’ to progress the project and that an updated feasibility study for the new DLR station is now expected to be finalised sometime in April.
In 2023, TfL said it did not have the funding to progress plans for the new station beyond its ‘current stage of development’.
A TfL spokesperson told Tower Hamlets Slice today that a funding gap still exists. They added that once the feasibility report had concluded, TfL would work with developers to address the gap.
The report also said the station would be on the longlist to receive funding from its Sustainable Housing and Accessibility (SHA) Fund this year. The SHA Fund is a capital fund made up of third party, TfL and Greater London Authority (GLA) funding. According to the report, a total of £140m is available for allocation to projects between 2025/26 and 2028/29.
Other projects prioritised for SHA Fund allocation are Pontoon Dock and Surrey Quays upgrades, and the LU step-free programme.
