Purpose

Social Streets CIC is a not-for-profit news and media group that publishes Roman Road LDN, Bethnal Green LDN, Whitechapel LDN and Poplar LDN. Its aim is to strengthen the local community by raising awareness of the local area and providing a voice for local people. We focus on issues and angles that increase our sense of belonging, pride and connection within the local area, and we celebrate the rich diversity found within our neighbourhood..

Editorial Integrity

It’s important we retain independence so that our content is trusted to be impartial and objective. We retain full editorial control of content. This is vital in order to maintain our editorial voice and to retain journalistic integrity. This means that while we will amend or correct factual information, any other editorial changes will be made at the editor’s discretion.

Publishing names

In line with the highest standards of journalism, all our sources are disclosed, including the full names of those we interview. Our house style stipulates that we refer people by their full name in the first instance and subsequently by their surname. This will be waived in instances where revealing the name will put the interviewee at personal risk.

Photography

As a social enterprise working to improve community life, we want to help our readers to connect to people in their neighbourhood, and photography is an important way of achieving this. Photography of people in their habitual environment is an essential part of our story telling offer. By agreeing to take part in a feature you are also agreeing to be photographed. We will not use photography that doesn’t give viewers a sense of home or locality. We ask our interviewees to be photographed in their homes or places of work. In some cases, where faces need to be obscured for cultural or legal reasons, we will work with the subject to find another way to take a photograph of the subject while respecting their privacy.
